How I doubled my paddy yield using SRI method with 40% less water
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“SRI spacing and intermittent drying doubled yield from 24 to 48 bags/acre while slashing seed and water costs by 70%.”
After attending an agronomy training at the district agriculture office, I shifted to the System of Rice Intensification (SRI) method on my 4-acre plot in Kurnool. Instead of flooding fields continuously, we maintained thin water films and transplanted single young seedlings (10 days old) at 25x25 cm spacing with a mechanical cono-weeder. The tillering was massive — 45 tillers per hill compared to 15 in traditional puddling. Total yield increased from 24 bags to 48 bags per acre while seed usage dropped from 25kg to just 2kg per acre.

Understanding soil health & NPK balance before sowing this Rabi season
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“Avoid excessive urea. Balanced NPK with 10kg Zinc Sulphate per acre increases Rabi root depth and moisture retention.”
Before rushing into Rabi sowing, every farmer must get their Soil Health Card checked. In southern black soils, excessive Urea usage without balanced Potash (MOP) and Zinc is creating soil compaction and reducing micronutrient availability. Always apply 10 MT of organic compost or FYM during primary plowing. For Bengal Gram and Maize, applying 10kg Zinc Sulphate per acre improves root nodulation and root capillary water absorption by 30%.

Our FPO secured ₹2Cr buyback purchase deal directly with ITC
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“FPO aggregation of 600 MT turmeric & maize enabled direct ₹2Cr ITC contract with instant T+0 weighbridge payment.”
We formed our collective Farmer Producer Organization two years ago with 45 smallholders in Warangal. By aggregating 600 metric tons of high-curcumin turmeric and certified hybrid maize, we bypassed village middlemen brokers and signed a direct institutional purchase agreement with ITC Agro division on Raithu Vikas. Farmers received guaranteed ₹7,200/quintal floor price with instant T+0 bank account transfers directly to their Passbooks upon weighbridge sign-off.

PM-KUSUM solar drip irrigation cut my electricity bill from ₹18,000 to ₹0
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“7.5HP solar drip pump under PM-KUSUM provides uninterrupted 8 AM - 4 PM irrigation with zero power costs.”
Frequent power cuts and low motor voltage during summer used to burn my 5HP borewell pumps twice every year. Last year, I availed the 60% PM-KUSUM government scheme subsidy on Raithu Vikas and installed a 7.5HP solar pump with automated drip lateral lines. Now, my drip irrigation runs continuously between 8 AM and 4 PM during peak sunlight without depending on grid electricity. My annual maintenance and power bill dropped to zero while turmeric root yield increased by 22%.

Bio-management of Fall Armyworm in Maize using Trichogramma & Neem
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“Pheromone traps + Trichogramma cards and Neem extract control Fall Armyworm below 3% without toxic chemicals.”
Fall Armyworm (FAW) can decimate up to 50% of young maize cobs if left unchecked. Instead of toxic synthetic chemical sprays that eliminate beneficial predatory insects, place 4-5 pheromone traps per acre at 15 days after sowing. Release Trichogramma parasitoid egg cards (20,000/acre) at 20 DAS and spray 10,000 PPM Neem Seed Kernel Extract (5ml/L). In university field trials, this bio-control protocol kept crop damage below 3% at one-fifth the cost of expensive chemicals.

Intercropping Chilli with Marigold and Coriander fetched ₹3.2L net profit
KEY TAKEAWAY & FARMER TIP
“Marigold trap border rows reduced chilli thrips attack by 65% and delivered ₹3.2L/acre net returns.”
Monocropping Guntur Teja chilli always carries severe risk of thrips and virus attack. This Kharif, I planted marigold flowers on every 10th border ridge and coriander as an intercrop between chilli rows. Marigolds acted as natural trap crops attracting thrips away from chilli flowers, while coriander gave quick cash flow within 45 days. My chemical pesticide expense dropped by 65%, and the chilli export grade yield fetched premium ₹18,500/quintal in Guntur Mandi.
